Inspired by Ben Meer

Why Invest in a Personal MBA?

A traditional MBA program can set you back over $150,000 and requires two years of intense study. While these programs offer networking opportunities and structured learning, the core business knowledge they provide can largely be obtained through self-education which can be gained from 12 books.

That’s the audacious claim made by Ben Meer in a recent LinkedIn post that’s set the business world buzzing. Meer, a Cornell MBA graduate and voracious reader of over 300 business books, argues that we can gain 90% of the knowledge offered by a traditional MBA program simply by curating our own curriculum and diving into the right books. Intrigued? You should be.

In today’s fast-paced world, where information is currency and adaptability is king, the traditional path to business mastery isn’t always the most efficient or accessible. Meer’s 6-month personal MBA reading list offers a compelling alternative – a self-directed, cost-effective way to acquire essential business acumen and accelerate your career trajectory.

This Personal MBA reading plan will take you through 12 carefully selected books covering strategy, entrepreneurship, finance, personal finance, marketing, operations, systems thinking, public speaking, negotiation, networking, leadership, and productivity. Each book builds upon the previous one, ensuring a holistic and seamless learning journey.

So, skip the lecture halls and embrace the library. Here’s Meer’s meticulously crafted curriculum, designed to give you a comprehensive business education in just six months, reading for only 30 minutes a day, two books a month:

Month 1: Laying the Foundation – Strategy & Entrepreneurship

Understanding strategy and entrepreneurship is the starting point for anyone looking to build a successful business or career.

1. Strategy: Zero to One by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters

Key Lessons:

Competition is for losers—create something unique instead of copying others.

Great businesses don’t just improve existing ideas; they create entirely new solutions (going from “zero to one”).

The most successful companies monopolize their niches before expanding.

This book sets the stage for thinking differently and challenging conventional wisdom. It leads perfectly into the next book, which focuses on how to take an idea and turn it into a tangible business.

2. Entrepreneurship: The Lean Startup by Eric Ries

Key Lessons:

Build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and improve it through continuous feedback.

Adaptability is more important than rigid planning.

The faster you test ideas, the quicker you can pivot toward success.

With the strategic mindset from Zero to One, you’re now prepared to launch a business effectively. But no business can survive without solid financial understanding—this is where the next two books come in.

Skip the $150k price tag. Your personal MBA starts with these 12 books. Check them out today!

Spend extravagantly on what you love, and cut mercilessly on things you don’t.

More than just a personal finance book, this is a guide to designing your “Rich Life.”

With a solid grasp of finance, you’re now ready to market and sell your ideas effectively.

6. Operations: The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt

Key Lessons:

Every business has bottlenecks—fix them to improve profitability.

Cash flow is king; focus on increasing throughput rather than cutting costs.

Use systems thinking to optimize processes and eliminate waste.

Month 4: Thinking Smarter – Systems Thinking & Public Speaking

Life can be chaotic, and if you’re anything like me, your home is both your sanctuary and the place where things often feel the most overwhelming. Over the years, I’ve learned that making a few simple changes around the house can dramatically improve my daily routine, reduce stress, and even save time.

I want to share 20 small but powerful changes I’ve made in my home that have helped me simplify my life. These are easy adjustments that don’t require major renovations—just a bit of creativity and a willingness to try something new.

1. Declutter One Room at a Time

Decluttering sounds like a massive project, but I found that tackling just one room at a time made it manageable. I started with the easiest space—the bathroom—where I threw out expired products and reorganized my essentials. Doing a little at a time made a huge difference.

2. Create a Drop Zone by the Entrance

I used to walk in the door and dump my bag, keys, and mail wherever. Now, I have a small table with a tray where everything goes. It keeps things organized, and I never have to scramble to find my keys when I’m rushing out.

3. Use Drawer Organizers

Before, my kitchen drawers were a nightmare. Now, I use small organizers to keep utensils, office supplies, and even socks neatly divided. It saves so much time searching for things.

4. Make Your Bed Every Morning

It sounds simple, but starting my day with a neatly made bed makes me feel accomplished before I even leave the room. Plus, coming home to a tidy bedroom is a small joy.

5. Label Everything

I used to waste time searching for things like flour, sugar, or batteries. Now, I label pantry containers, storage bins, and even cables. It’s a lifesaver, especially when I need something quickly.

6. Keep a Daily Planner

Planners can help with organizing things to make life easier. Check out this 12-month weekly planner to master your busy schedule and stay organized in your everyday life.

Feeling overwhelmed at home? Small changes can make a BIG difference! Check out these 20 simple home hacks to create a more peaceful and organized space.

7. Adopt a One-Minute Rule

If something takes less than a minute to do—like putting away shoes or wiping down the counter—I do it immediately. It prevents small tasks from turning into overwhelming messes.

8. Keep a Donation Box Handy

I placed a donation box in my closet, and anytime I find clothes I no longer wear, I toss them in. When it fills up, I donate it. This keeps clutter from building up.

9. Use Baskets for Quick Clean-Ups

Having a few decorative baskets around makes tidying up easy. Whether it’s for kids’ toys, remote controls, or random items, I just toss things in and sort them later.

10. Create a Weekly Meal Plan

I used to stare at my fridge every evening, wondering what to cook. Now, I plan meals every Sunday and write them on a whiteboard. It saves me stress and reduces food waste.

11. Invest in Smart Storage Solutions

Under-bed storage bins, over-the-door organizers, and stackable shelves have helped me maximize space in small areas. It’s amazing how much space you can find when you get creative.

12. Automate Routine Tasks

I set up auto-pay for my bills and use smart plugs to schedule lights to turn off at bedtime. Little automations like these free up mental energy for more important things.

Your home should be your sanctuary, not a source of stress. Here are 20 practical ways to simplify your space and make life easier every day.

I’m not a hardcore minimalist, but I’ve started focusing on keeping only what I love and use. Fewer things mean less to clean, organize, and worry about—making my home feel lighter and my life easier.

16. Keep a “Maybe” Box for Indecisive Decluttering

Sometimes, I’m not sure whether to get rid of something, so I put it in a “maybe” box. If I don’t use or think about it within three months, I donate it. This makes decluttering easier without the fear of regret.

17. Designate a “Tech-Free” Zone

In order to spend less time on my phone at night, I made my bedroom a tech-free zone. Now, I sleep better and feel more relaxed at night. Try it in a space where you want to unplug and unwind. Also, because it’s unhealthy to sleep in a room with so much electromagnetic emissions, I keep my phones at a distance at night.

18. Declutter Your Digital Space

Occassionally, I organize my phone and computer by deleting old and unwanted files, clearing notifications, and keeping my inbox tidy. A clutter-free digital space leads to a clutter-free mind. Try this smart planner.

19. Use a Shoe Rack Near the Door

Having a designated place for shoes right by the entrance keeps my floors cleaner and prevents the dreaded shoe pile-up. Plus, I never have to hunt for missing shoes when I’m in a rush.

20. Stock Up on Everyday Essentials

Running out of toilet paper or toothpaste at the worst moment is the worst. Now, I keep a small stash of household essentials so I’m never caught off guard. It’s a simple trick that prevents unnecessary stress.

Final Thoughts

Making life easier at home doesn’t require a complete overhaul—just small, thoughtful changes that add up over time. Start with one or two of these tips, and you’ll be amazed at how much more peaceful and organized your home (and life) can feel.
